It's interesting to note the poll numbers that Dkos put up about Gay Marriage.
46% of Democrats think Gay Marriage should be illegal.
What does this say about our party?
I would argue that we can draw two conclusions:
- The Democratic Party is not as "liberal" as the Republicans make us out to be.
- Gay Marriage is not a mainstream idea (yet?) Why should we fight tooth and nail for Gay Marriage, rather than the less politically volatile Civil Unions?
Once we have civil unions, then we can move to the next step.
It's much harder for Republicans to say, "I don't want gays to visit their loved ones in hospitals." than "I don't support gays getting married."
